Hair appliqués

Or ‘floaters’, as I tend to call them, as it is faster.  (Especially since I have to specially paste ‘appliqués’ so that the accent is present.  I’m an Ontarian living right on the border of Québec…it grates my nerves to see a word that I know is supposed to have a French accent…accent aigu, in this case…without them.  It just feels wrong.  So, being lazy, I tend to avoid using the word in the first place.)

At any rate, I have made some.  Just prototypes…it’s very easy to see that I’m only testing the idea, so far, and haven’t come up with the final design.  These are very basic, with the exception of the leaf (it’s actually a set of five but I haven’t embellished the other four yet) which takes considerably longer since I have to make the tiny multi-bead dangle and then sew it on.  I did it wrong, though…the positioning is off and it needs something else to look a little more natural.  Not that it’s bad…but I do want them to look more like something real, and the beads don’t look natural on there the way I have them, yet.  Well, I’m still trying…we’ll see what else I can come up with.

I had much better success with buttons, which I think look adorable in the hair, though I haven’t fully decided how to add a little flair.  So far, plain leaves and the blue button set are my favourites…but have a look for yourself!

The larger multi-coloured button set is spaced too far apart for my taste…but you can place the floaters ANYWHERE in the hair…even on your bangs, as you can see in these photos.  You can place them in a straight line, scattered all over your hair, above a pigtail…anything at all.  And so far there are no problems with them falling out.

I like the flower least, as it is too bulky…I need softer, flatter flowers, like a daisy, but it’s hard to find really nice silk/etc flowers, especially in a small, relatively flat size/shape.  So, once I find all the right supplies, I should be able to make some of these for sale, too. :)

Have you thought about die-cut flowers? I think you can get them at craft shops and put them together yourself? I think you can get fabric ones too…

I’m curious as to how you get them to stay on the hair without them falling off. *chuckles* Especially given my hair is so weird…I’d love to try some at some point - just need the money. (I’m saving up!)

I really like the flower one tho. (now if only you had one in blue…*winks and grins*)

The buttons are a very cute idea!!!

I like that they don’t seem to need certain ways of wearing hair and large amounts to hold them to place. My hair is wild but free, and I like things that I can add in, that would allow for some adjustment of style, as I run my fingers through my hair constantly all day, flipping it out of my face!

*I am a Leo after all, LOL*

Tsuki: For now the way I make them is a secret. Especially given that I haven’t even perfected them and put them up for sale, yet. :)

Die-cut as in felt? I’ve never seen them for sale anywhere, actually, and I don’t have a die system…and they’re usually expensive. (THe cutter, then all the different shapes…costs a fortune for paper die cutters so I’m sure the same would be true of any other kind.) It would be fine to use them, but since I don’t seem to have access to those supplies, no, I hadn’t really considered it. I have my eye out now, though…anything I find that looks suitable I’m picking up to do further experiments with.

Elle: If you ran your fingers through your hair and snagged a floater, it would come out in your hand. They will stay in your hair all day without budging if they aren’t touched…or even if you have a nap or go for a bike ride. But it is very easy to pull them out by hand. It kind of has to be that way, or they’d be painful to use. :)

These just sit atop the hair…they hold NO hair at all. Seriously, they just cling to whatever section of hair you press them to and that’s that.
